Showcasing the Cross Border Challenge at GreenBuild

The Sustainable Housing Foundation will introduce the Cross Border Builders Challenge in participation with BILD at GreenBuild 2011 in Toronto, which runs October 4th – 7th.

BILD launches Canada House and an epic challenge to U.S. builders

Greater Toronto, September xxx, 2011 – The Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) is launching Canada House—a showcase of home grown green products and services at the Steam Whistle Brewery. Canada House is a key part of the upcoming GreenBuild conference taking place in Toronto, October 4-7, 2011.

GreenBuild, the annual conference of the United States Green Building Council, will welcome more than 30,000 delegates from around the world and this is the first year the conference has been hosted outside of the United States.

“It’s entirely apropos that GreenBuild is coming here given our leading-edge Ontario Building Code and Green Energy Act, not to mention the Canadian home building industry’s enviable track record as world leaders in energy-efficient construction,” said BILD President and CEO Stephen Dupuis.

Canada House will officially open to conference delegates on October 4.  At the same time, the Sustainable Housing Foundation with BILD and CRESNET will reveal its challenge to homebuilders south of the 49th parallel. The Cross Border Builders Challenge is a call to build homes that are 30 per cent more energy efficient than current Canadian building standards and 50 per cent more energy efficient than an American-standard built house.

“On my 50th birthday, I created the Green is 50 Builders’ Challenge for GTA builders,” said John Godden, President of Clearsphere, a Toronto-based green building and consulting business and founder of the Sustainable Housing Foundation.

“This started out as a local challenge to get 50 homes built to a 50 per cent better energy standard than the current building code and it was a huge success with more than 75 homes meeting the challenge. Now it’s time to put the challenge to our peers south of the border.”

More than 35 Canadian builders are participating in the Challenge so far including BILD member companies Empire Communities; Marshall Homes; Greenpark Homes and many more. Projects that meet the challenge will be featured in a slideshow at Canada House during the duration of the GreenBuild conference.
